These pieces were written separately, but they turned out to be the same argument told three ways: that rigour and beauty are treated as opposing forces by industries that would both be better if they stopped.
The first makes the case from the outside — what healthcare loses by communicating like a journal. The second goes inward, to what research actually is when it is done honestly. The third is the one I'd have wanted to read at 23, standing in a lab at 11pm, certain I was in the wrong place. Read together they describe a method, not a career.
Walk into a great hotel and something happens that you probably cannot fully articulate. The temperature feels right. The materials under your hands feel considered. The person at the desk speaks to you in a way that is professional without being distant, warm without being performative. Every sensory detail has been thought about — not just functionally, but in terms of how it makes you feel about yourself in this space.
This is design in the deepest sense. Not decoration. Not branding applied over a product. A total experience engineered to make the person inside it feel a particular way.
Now walk into most clinical spaces.
Healthcare and biotech are producing some of the most extraordinary science of any era. GLP-1 receptor agonists. mRNA therapeutics. CRISPR-based treatments entering clinical trials for conditions that were categorically untreatable ten years ago. The science is, by any measure, astonishing.
The experience of encountering it — as a patient, as a consumer, as a human being trying to make decisions about your own body — is frequently the opposite. Clinical language designed for peer review delivered directly to patients. Visual identity built on the colour palette of a 1990s hospital. Communication that is technically accurate and emotionally illiterate.
This is not a superficial problem. Patients who do not trust their treatment are less likely to adhere to it. Consumers who do not understand a product are less likely to use it correctly. People who feel condescended to by health communication disengage and make decisions based on whatever fills the vacuum — usually wellness content with better branding and worse evidence.
Emotion precedes reason in almost every decision a human being makes. You do not choose a perfume based on its molecular composition. You choose it based on how it makes you feel, what it says about who you are, what the bottle looks like on your shelf. The chemistry is real. It is also secondary to the experience of the chemistry.
The same mechanism governs health decisions. People do not adopt behaviours because they are evidence-based. They adopt behaviours because the behaviour fits into an identity they hold or aspire to. Skincare became a cultural movement not because the dermatology improved, but because the industry learned to speak a language of self-care, ritual, and identity alongside the efficacy claims. The efficacy was always there. The language changed everything.
Every touchpoint is a communication. The waiting room communicates something. The font on the discharge summary communicates something. The way a clinical trial is explained to a participant communicates something — about whether this institution sees them as a subject or a person.
Friction is not neutral. Every unnecessary friction is a small withdrawal from a trust account that was already hard to build.
The biotech companies that will define the next decade are not only the ones with the best science. They are the ones with the best science that people actually understand, trust, and feel something about.
People think research is collecting information. It isn't.
Collecting information is what happens before research begins. Research is the moment you decide which question is worth asking and how to design a way of answering it that doesn't simply confirm what you already believe.
That distinction sounds technical. It is, in fact, the difference between thinking and thinking well.
The best researchers are not the most knowledgeable people in a room. They are the most comfortable with uncertainty.
Knowledge is what you have before a good question dismantles it. The researcher's job is not to accumulate facts but to build a structure for questioning them — a methodology rigorous enough that when the answer surprises you, you trust the surprise.
This requires a particular kind of creativity. Not the kind that generates ideas freely and abundantly, though that is useful later. The kind that identifies the assumption buried inside a question and rebuilds the question without it.
A brand conducts consumer research. The findings confirm the strategy that was already decided. Everyone is satisfied.
This is not research. This is evidence collection in service of a predetermined conclusion, which is the scientific equivalent of measuring a table with a ruler you built to match the table.
Real research changes the strategy. If your findings never change your direction, your methodology is designed to protect your direction, not interrogate it.
Design thinking borrowed this from science and made it accessible. The double diamond. Divergent before convergent. Problem-finding before problem-solving. But the underlying logic is much older and more rigorous than any design framework: you cannot answer a question you have not properly formed. Forming it properly requires sitting with discomfort long enough to separate what you know from what you assume you know.
Most people skip this step because it is slow and unglamorous and produces nothing you can put in a presentation. It is also the only step that matters.
The question before the question is where the real thinking happens. Everything after is execution. Execution is important. But you can execute the wrong answer with extraordinary precision and still be completely wrong.
At some point during my molecular biology years, surrounded by pipettes and centrifuges and the specific existential dread of a failed PCR at 11pm, I was completely convinced I was in the wrong place.
I was right. But not for the reasons I thought.
The business world has a dirty secret. Most of it runs on intuition dressed up as strategy. On PowerPoints that sound confident and mean nothing. On "we've always done it this way" defended with the energy of someone protecting their firstborn child.
Meanwhile, you — with your thesis, your methodology section, your six months of data collection for a conclusion that got three sentences in a paper nobody read — you have been trained to do something most people in a boardroom genuinely cannot.
This sounds depressing. It is, in fact, a superpower.
Most people in business fall in love with their idea and then look for evidence to support it. Scientists are trained — painfully, repeatedly, with a supervisor's red pen — to do the opposite. To design experiments that try to break the idea. To look for what doesn't fit. To update their position when the data says so.
Imagine being that person in a strategy meeting. You are not married to the outcome. You are married to the process. That makes you calm when everyone else is panicking and clear when everyone else is performing certainty they don't have.
Research is just intelligence gathering with better methodology. The same skills you used to conduct a literature review — finding sources, evaluating credibility, synthesizing contradictory information into a coherent picture — are exactly what separates good business decisions from expensive mistakes.
Everyone has access to the same internet. Not everyone knows how to read a study. Not everyone can tell the difference between correlation and causation in a market report. Not everyone has spent years developing the discipline to say "the evidence doesn't support this conclusion yet."
There is also the question of credibility, which nobody talks about enough. A scientific background in a creative or business context is genuinely unusual. Unusual is memorable. In a world where everyone has an MBA and a LinkedIn full of synergies, walking into a room as the person who used to study cell signalling pathways and now builds brand strategy is, at minimum, an interesting story.
At maximum, it's a positioning.
You understand complexity. You are not afraid of data. You can communicate technical information to non-technical people because you spent years explaining your research to funding committees who wanted results, not methodology. That translation skill alone is worth more than most courses you could take.
In a lab, you take six months to validate something properly. In business, someone will ask you for an answer by Thursday.
This is the adjustment. Not intelligence, not rigour, not credibility — just learning to make a good enough decision with the information available and move, while still being the person in the room who knows what "good enough" actually means.
The scientific mind without adaptability is just very expensive caution. The scientific mind with adaptability is the person everyone wants in the room when things get complicated.
And things always get complicated.
Your diploma isn't a detour. It's the long way around to a very specific kind of clarity that most people spend their entire careers trying to develop and never quite reach.
Three essays that began as separate pieces and turned out to describe one job: understand something properly, then make other people able to feel why it matters. The first argues that healthcare loses trust when it forgets the second half. The second argues that most organisations skip the first. The third is about carrying both between worlds that rarely share a room.
